Stitch

Stitching has been a part of my life since my teenage years. I think back to kits that had cross stitching and embroidery projects a bit from my youth, but mostly I simply played around with a needle, floss, and hoop as tools to add a little adornment to clothing or items around the home. It wasn’t until more recently that I took this traditional craft to meet my design aesthetic and look and truly see it as a from of art.

I like to design using Elements of Art and Principles of design to make my pieces. My favorite quote is by Cubist artist Paul Klee - ‘A line is a dot that went for a walk’ - and as a person who has been doodling since I first picked a pencil, or I like to think so anyway, this is how my stitched pieces begin. Find an inspiration, draw a dot, make a line, and see what shapes come next. Colors are thoughtfully chosen for each piece - currently the use of black and white striping is a predominant part of this body of work.

As far as making this fiber art practice sustainable, I purchase my floss and materials locally. My hope is that in the coming years the use nature’s colors to dye floss will come to play. However, supporting local is important for a small community to survive, so at this point, most of my embroidered designs are made this way.
